Samsara Review 2026
IoT-based fleet tracking, ELD & safety cameras
ReviewLake Score
Best for: Mid-size to large fleets that want hardware and software from one vendor
Our quick verdict
Buy it if
You run a mid-size or large fleet (15+ vehicles) and want GPS tracking, ELD compliance, and AI-powered driver-safety cameras from a single vendor - and you're comfortable with a longer contract to get there.
Think twice if
You're an owner-operator or a very small fleet prioritizing the lowest price - Samsara's own small-business fit score is 5.0/10, and its pricing and contract terms are built around larger operations.
Biggest strength: Strong GPS tracking accuracy and real-time map view
Biggest weakness: Multi-year contracts are common and can be hard to exit

ReviewLake Score breakdown
Excellent for the fleets it's built for - mid-size and large operations wanting GPS, ELD, and safety cameras from one vendor - but priced and contracted in a way that makes it a weaker value for owner-operators and small fleets.
Pricing
Pricing model
Quote-onlyQuote-based, priced per vehicle with hardware bundled in - get a written quote before committing to contract length
Samsara doesn't publish a price list, so your quote depends on a handful of factors worth asking about directly on your sales call:
- Fleet size. Per-vehicle pricing means your total scales directly with vehicle count.
- Hardware selection. Dash cams, sensors, and ELD devices are typically bundled into the subscription rather than billed separately.
- Modules enabled. GPS, ELD, safety, and maintenance/fuel tracking may be priced as separate add-ons.
- Contract length. Multi-year terms are common - ask what early exit actually costs before signing.
We don't publish estimated dollar figures for quote-only software - too many fleets have reported meaningfully different quotes for us to responsibly put a number here. Get a written quote from Samsara directly before comparing total cost against alternatives.

ELD & FMCSA compliance
ELD is one of the core modules on Samsara's platform, alongside maintenance and fuel data. Per Samsara's own FAQ, the driver app sends real-time notifications intended to help prevent Hours-of-Service violations and speed up IFTA reporting. We haven't independently timed the logs workflow ourselves, so treat 'how simple' it is as Samsara's own claim until you've tried it.
AI dash cams & driver safety
Confirmed in our own research: Samsara's AI dash cams automatically flag unsafe driving events - harsh braking, following distance, distraction. Samsara's product pages also describe real-time in-cab alerts and driver coaching/safety reporting. One caveat: we could not confirm whether those in-cab alerts are voice-based specifically (Samsara's own materials mention 'in-cab nudges' without specifying voice delivery), so we've marked that as unconfirmed rather than guessing.
Fleet maintenance & diagnostics
Samsara's platform covers maintenance and fuel data alongside ELD and GPS, per our own review research. Samsara's own product pages additionally describe vehicle diagnostics and fault-code intelligence. We have not independently verified the specifics of preventative-maintenance scheduling (e.g. how far in advance it flags service intervals) - confirm exact workflow details on a demo before buying.
Routing & dispatch integration
Samsara publishes a developer TMS-integration marketplace, and has a confirmed, publicly announced integration with McLeod Software's LoadMaster Enterprise (reported by both companies and covered independently by FreightWaves) - relevant if you're already running McLeod, which we also review. Beyond that specific integration, we have not independently verified compatibility with every TMS platform - confirm your specific system integrates before buying.
Feature availability matrix

| Asset tracking (trailers & equipment) | Yes | Confirmed on Samsara's own telematics and FAQ pages. |
| Temperature / cold-chain monitoring | Yes | Confirmed via Samsara's Environmental Monitor hardware. |
| In-cab voice alerts | Partial | Samsara confirms real-time in-cab alerts/nudges; voice-specific delivery isn't confirmed in their materials. |

Pros & Cons
What we like
- Strong GPS tracking accuracy and real-time map view
- AI dash cams flag unsafe driving events automatically
- Single platform covers ELD, maintenance, and fuel data
What to watch
- Multi-year contracts are common and can be hard to exit
- Full feature set is priced for larger fleets, not owner-operators
Who is Samsara for?
Ideal for
- 15+ vehicle mixed fleets looking for safety automation
- Fleet managers who want GPS, ELD, and safety cameras in one system
- Operations prioritizing driver-safety monitoring
- Teams that want one vendor for hardware and software
Not ideal for
- 1-3 vehicle owner-operators on a tight budget
- Fleets under roughly 15 vehicles
- Budget-first buyers wanting the lowest possible monthly cost
- Teams unwilling to commit to a multi-year contract
Samsara built its name on IoT hardware - sensors and cameras that feed data back into one dashboard. For fleets that want a single vendor handling GPS, ELD compliance, and driver safety footage, that consolidation is the main draw. Support and account management typically scale with fleet size, so smaller operators may find more attentive service with a fleet-focused competitor.
Top Samsara alternatives
Looking for a different fit? These are the closest comparisons in our own research. (We don't yet have an independent review of GPS Insight, so we're not including it here rather than guessing at a score.)
Want a lighter, cheaper setup for a smaller fleet? Motive's modular pricing lets you start with ELD only and add features as you grow.
Want maximum integration flexibility, especially across multiple countries? Geotab is an open platform with the largest third-party ecosystem in the category.
Want video telematics plus dedicated EV-transition planning, backed by Verizon's network? Verizon Connect bundles both from one vendor.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Samsara cost?
Samsara doesn't publish pricing. It's quote-based, priced per vehicle with hardware bundled in, and scales with fleet size and which modules (GPS, ELD, dash cams) you select. Get a written quote before committing to a contract length.
Does Samsara require a contract?
Multi-year contracts are common with Samsara and, per user reports, can be hard to exit early - confirm the exact term and early-exit terms before signing.
Does Samsara include ELD compliance?
Yes - ELD is one of the core modules covered under Samsara’s single platform, alongside maintenance and fuel data.
Does Samsara have dash cams?
Yes. Samsara’s AI-powered dash cams flag unsafe driving events (harsh braking, following distance, distraction) automatically.
Is Samsara good for small trucking companies or owner-operators?
Generally not the best fit. Samsara is built and priced for mid-size to large fleets - our data has it starting around 15 vehicles - and its own small-business fit score is one of its lowest (5.0/10). Owner-operators and very small fleets are typically better served by a lighter, cheaper platform.
Is Samsara better than Motive?
It depends on fleet size and budget, not a flat yes/no. Samsara suits mid-size to large fleets that want GPS, ELD, and safety cameras from one vendor and can accept a longer contract. Motive suits smaller fleets that want a lighter, modular setup. See our full Samsara vs Motive comparison below.
Does Samsara offer a free trial?
We haven't independently confirmed this - Samsara's sales process is quote-based, so check directly with them for current trial or pilot-program options.
Does Samsara integrate with accounting or dispatch software?
Samsara publishes a developer TMS-integration marketplace and has a confirmed, independently reported integration with McLeod Software's LoadMaster Enterprise. We haven't independently verified Samsara's full integration list beyond that, so confirm compatibility with your specific accounting, TMS, or payroll tools before buying.
